All images and text © ADRIAN WINTER 2008.

These pictures were taken during the winter of 2004 at Heysham, Lancashire, where a large flock of knot, Calidris canutus, numbering up to 28,000 birds can be found at high tide using the heli-pad to roost and at low tide the exposed area of sand and mud for feeding. It is a truly awesome sight, be the birds milling around on the ground with their constant chattering calls or swooping around the sky in a wildly fluctuating swarm in response to a passing peregrine. Some of these images were used in a college project which you can see here.
